Creating Sacred Spaces for Daily Practice

Perhaps like you, I have struggled with being ‘too busy’ for the medicine I knew I needed. As a mother of 3, designer, and a recovering workaholic, I know what it’s like to have a plate full with projects, tasks, and other peoples needs, and to put them so urgently in front of devotion to the self.

Looking inward and devoting time to aligning with our highest selves may actually yield the most benefit to those people we are trying to serve. Yet, it is something that we, as a culture, are simply under-skilled at doing, and it takes practice.

More than being under-skilled, our attention is being redirected away from our center in a plethora of directions.  Modern society skillfully slices away at our internal awareness with thousand tiny slits. We turn to wellness to stitch us back together when we reach total depletion.

But whatever wellness modality we align with, (meditation, movement, massage, breath-work) it does no good to us if we don’t practice it.

If you are like I was, you push these practices to the last in line - sabotaging their importance with a busy, or burnt out, mindset and a distracting environment.

“I’ve never seen someone consistently stick to positive habits in a negative environment. It's hard to resist the pull of what engulfs us. Thankfully, you don't have to be the victim of your environment. You can also be the architect of it. Design carefully.”  - James Clear

Just as the author of the best-selling book “Atomic Habits” says above, the good news is that you can create conditions that make your practice a habit. Creating a space that signals safety to your nervous system allows you to quiet your conscious mind, activate your intuitive insights and dive deeper into your body-based wisdom.

It is my belief that amidst our busy lives now heaped up with uninvited distractions, we require protected, sacred spaces devoted solely to the important work of going inwards. Because within us are complex worlds of sensory data that can be harnessed as fuel for the lives and impact we long to create.

We can define and craft spaces for ourselves that serve as portals for connecting to our inner worlds. MYŌTH is ‘my oath’ to creating those portals. And if you are looking to make space for connecting to your core, it can be your oath, too.

MYŌTH is a place to find tools and objects that help you create your own portal. But mostly, I hope you leave inspired to Define your Āra.
